Why You Should Fill Out the FAFSA (Even if You Think It’s a Waste of Time!)

All schools must use the FAFSA as the mandatory application for awarding federal student aid, and in some cases, even merit-based scholarships provided by colleges and universities mandate applicants to submit the FAFSA.

Before each year of college, apply for federal grants, work-study, and loans with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form. Your college uses your FAFSA data to determine your federal aid eligibility. Many states and colleges use FAFSA data to award their own aid.

Scholarship programs that pay the in-district tuition and mandatory fees only after Pell and other tuition-only scholarships and grants have been applied.

Graduate from a high school located within the City of Flint, or receive a GED in the City of Flint, in March 2018 or after.

Flint Promise is a scholarship program for graduates of high schools located in the city of Flint. By covering the cost of tuition after federal grants and other scholarships have been applied, Flint Promise allows eligible students to attend participating colleges for little to no cost. In doing so, the scholarship program provides increased access to higher education for Flint’s young people and represents a continuous investment in the city’s future.

Must be at least 21 years old when you apply.

Michigan Reconnect (Reconnect) is a last-dollar scholarship program that pays for you to attend your in-district community college tuition-free or offers a large tuition discount if you attend an out-of-district community college.

If you’re interested in pursuing a career training program instead, starting later this year, you can receive up to $1,500 towards tuition costs for eligible career training programs here in Michigan with the Short-Term Training Program.
