(WJRT) - Students and staff in Flint Community Schools gathered Thursday as the final piece of steel was signed and placed for the school district's newest building in more than 50 years. Flint Community Schools is expected to have a grand opening ceremony for The Cube in September. Students and staff apart of Flint Community Schools were at Brownell STEM Academy and neighboring Holmes STEM Middle School academy to sign their name for the last steel beam.Ā  Education Flint Community Schools get $14 million for renovation, expansion By: Dawn Jones The final steel beam was then lifted into place on top of The Cube. The building will be the school district's first new construction project in 50 years. "We begin to look up what's going on in other countries, education in other countries," says Flint Community Schools superintendent Kevelin Jones. "We saw something similar, called The Cube, as a resource center. And we said, well, we want to put that on our property for our children." The Cube is part of a $40 million investment in the North Side schools.Ā  The building will be 5,000 square feet, and it will serve students and the surrounding community. Everybody says this neighborhood is down, but now it is looking up," says the president of Brownell Holmes Neighborhood Association, Jeanette Edwards. "We're not going down, we're going up. With The Cube, it's going to be a hub for the whole neighborhood." The Cube will offer extended hours, provide an office space, community meeting space and programming for adults and students.Ā  It tells them that they are valued," said Jones. "It tells them that they're worth it. They don't have to go out of the city, out of their neighborhoods, to see a state-of-the-art building." Jones adds that this kind of building is the first of its kind in the United States. "I've got neighbors that ride by and looking and asking is the building you are all talking about," explained Edwards. "I say yes, that's The Cube, so they are taking pride. That is a good thing about a neighborhood like ours."

FLINT, Mich. ā€” The Flint Community Schools District is moving forward with plans for a new high school, thanks to a $750,000 grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. The school board members unanimously accepted the grant Wednesday night, marking a significant step toward creating the new educational facility. The funds will be allocated for the project's design and planning phase. Although the high school campus is still far from completion, district officials view this as progress. "Schematic design is just allowing us to get community feedback and also have some type of foundation of what this building can look like," said Kevelin Jones, superintendent of Flint Community Schools. "But we will not do that without our community, our scholars, our teachers, the staff, and the Board of Education." Mott Foundation to begin the process of developing a new high school at the site of a historic but dilapidated school at 601 Crapo Street. The school district plans to develop a state-of-the-art high school campus on the property. The $750,000 Mott Foundation grant pays for planning and designing the new school. "This investment underscores our commitment to creating a modern educational facility that reflects the excellence and resilience of Flint scholars," said Superintendent Kevelin Jones. "This new school will provide opportunities for innovation, academic growth, and community engagement for generations to come." News Flint Schools board members see future for redevelopment of Central High School By: Miriam Bingham Flint Community Schools did not announce a timeline for construction on the new school or whether any historical elements of the existing Flint Central campus may be reused. Flint, MI ā€“ December 12, 2024 ā€“ Flint Community Schools (FCS) proudly announces meeting its 18-month benchmark goals in Literacy, Mathematics, and Systems under the Partnership Agreement with the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). The schools identified as Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) schools overwhelmingly met their individual goals, contributing to the district being on track as identified by the MDE Metrics of Success. This achievement underscores the district's commitment to its mission: "To develop a community of learners who are prepared to live, work, and contribute to an ever-changing society." Key Academic Achievements - FCS demonstrated substantial improvements in: M-STEP/PSAT Literacy and Math NWEA Scholar Growth in Reading and Mathematics Kelly Fields, Director of the Office of Academics, reflected on the districtā€™s progress: "This achievement is the result of a shared vision and relentless focus on student success. Our educators, scholars, and partners have worked tirelessly to create growth opportunities, and these milestones prove what we can accomplish together. We remain committed to using data, innovation, and collaboration to ensure every scholar is prepared for the future." The Partnership Agreement, initiated on April 17, 2023, is a collaborative effort among FCS, the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD), and the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). It focuses on enhancing student achievement through targeted strategies in key areas: Literacy: Implementing evidence-based reading programs and providing professional development for educators to improve student literacy outcomes. Mathematics: Adopting innovative instructional practices and curricula to elevate student proficiency in mathematics. Systems Improvement: Strengthening district-wide systems to support effective teaching and learning, including the utilization of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) to inform instruction. Receiving the prestigious MiMTSS Recognition award for the district's 2023-2024 school year, marking the third consecutive year of this significant achievement. This recognition underscores the dedication and hard work of Flint educators and administrators in fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students through the Michigan Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MiMTSS) framework. Flint Community Schools received recognition in two categories for 2023-2024: MTSS Data Utilization and MTSS Implementation and Impact. These honors reflect Flintā€™s proactive approach to using data insights to tailor interventions and improve educational outcomes for every scholar. These successes reflect targeted efforts to enhance scholar performance, with support from Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) Early Literacy Coaches. Key strategies included: Classroom Coaching: Side-by-side guidance for certified and uncertified teachers in K-4 classrooms. Focused on small group instruction, student voice, formal assessment, and cognitive engagement. Comprehensive Literacy Support: Co-planning, co-teaching, and instructional cycles tailored to foster literacy development. GISD Support through PPSC and MTSS training. Data-Driven Decision-Making with MSU Support Through the Regional Assistance Grant, FCS leveraged federal funds (~$650,000 annually in 2023-24 and 2024-25) through the Michigan Department of Education to enhance data-driven instruction and capacity building: MSU Data Coaching: Supported central office and school leaders in using scholarly data to align instructional goals with Partnership Agreement objectives. Instructional Leadership Fellowship: Delivered six sessions to principals and central office administrators, focusing on attendance, literacy, math, and data-informed strategies. Coaching: Providing targeted coaching and support to principals and central office administrators, aligning efforts with Partnership Agreement Goals in ELA, Math, and Attendance. Facilitate "Data All The Time" conversations to reinforce progress monitoring and drive continuous improvement. Transformational Campus Upgrades The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and other partners contributed to state-of-the-art renovations across FCS campuses, creating engaging, secure, and student-centered environments: Brownell/Holmes STEM Academy Campus: Renovated early childhood wing and courtyards. Developed new playgrounds, basketball courts, pickleball, and the community hub (ā€œThe Cubeā€). Updated the football field, running track, and building faƧades. Potter Elementary Campus: $11 million renovation featuring a modern learning environment with enhanced security and upgraded facilities. Additions include a conference room, kitchen, principalā€™s office, two bathrooms, a new community engagement room, and renovating the auditorium for events with state-of-the-art equipment. Flint, MI ā€” November 13, 2024 ā€“ Flint Community Schools is excited to invite families, scholars, staff, and community members to a Homecoming Celebration and Open House for Brownell STEM Academy and Holmes STEM Middle Schools Academy. The event marks a significant milestone as we gather to honor the progress made in revitalizing our beloved schools. Due to continued construction on the Cube, playgrounds, and track areas, the Ribbon Cuttings originally scheduled for November 22, 2024, will be rescheduled, we will schedule the ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially mark the conclusion of the full renovation project. We believe this will also allow us to engage more meaningfully with the entire Flint community, which has been integral to this journey. The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has generously granted $14 million to Flint Community Schools to support renovations to the Brownell STEM Academy and Holmes STEM Middle School campus on the cityā€™s north side. Additionally, Flint Community Schools utilized $26 million in federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds to renovate the campus, which, between both schools, is capable of providing educational opportunities to more than 600 scholars from 6 weeks old through eighth grade. Campus improvements include: Upgrading the faƧade on each building. A newly developed and renovated Early Childhood wing servicing scholars from 6 weeks to 4 years old. Two new dedicated age-appropriate playgrounds for Brownell STEM Academy: o An early childhood playground. o An elementary playground. Replacement of the running track. Updating the football field. Installing basketball courts. Rerouting the parking lot to support traffic flow to The Cube and the early childhood wing. Constructing a new community hub, referred to as ā€œThe Cube.ā€ The Cube is a prominent feature of the renovations, a 5,000-square-foot building specifically designed to serve as a flexible community space. The Cube will be accessible to scholars, staff, residents, and the broader community throughout the school day, with extended hours on mornings, evenings, and weekends. The Cube can host a variety of events such as neighborhood meetings, adult education classes, recreational activities for all ages, senior services, and afterschool programming, addressing diverse community needs. The Flint Center for Educational Excellence and the Brownell-Holmes Neighborhood Association will collaborate to actively support and coordinate activities within the Cube, fostering a strong community partnership. The Cube will serve as a central hub for collaboration and community engagement, promoting unity, empowerment, and community cohesion among residents to strengthen bonds within the community. By providing a versatile space for diverse events and programs, the Cube aims to directly enhance the overall well-being and connectivity of the neighborhood, fostering a vibrant and connected community. Flint Community Schools and Flint Board of Education Celebrate the Ribbon Cutting for Brownell STEM Academy and Holmes STEM Middle School Flint, MI ā€“ November 7, 2024 - Flint Community Schools (FCS) is thrilled to announce the ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the newly renovated Brownell STEM Academy and Holmes STEM Middle School Academy. These ceremonies mark a significant step in the districtā€™s commitment to providing enhanced learning environments for Flintā€™s scholars. The ribbon cuttings will take place on November 22, 2024, with Brownell STEM Academyā€™s ribbon cutting at 9:00 a.m. and Holmes STEM Middle School Academy at 11:00 a.m. The renovations, part of an extensive improvement plan supported by ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) funds, bring updated technology, new curriculum materials, and modern furniture to the schools. This project is one of four major renovations across the district, demonstrating the Flint Board of Educationā€™s dedication to equipping scholars and educators with tools and environments that foster growth, innovation, and engagement. The district successfully allocated its full ESSER fund balance to complete these vital projects. ā€œThis is a transformative moment for Flint Community Schools and our scholars,ā€ said Kevelin Jones, Superintendent of Flint Community Schools. ā€œBrownell and Holmes are more than just updated buildingsā€”they are spaces where our scholars can dream, explore, and realize their potential.
