Flint, Michigan – February 18, 2025 – Flint Community Schools is excited to present the 3rd Annual "A Taste of Literacy," a dynamic and engaging event designed to empower families in fostering literacy skills among children. This highly anticipated event will occur on March 5, 2025, at the Flint Farmers' Market, providing an interactive and enriching experience for the entire community.
For one exceptional night, the Flint Farmers’ Market will transform into a literacy hub, opening its doors exclusively to families to celebrate reading, learning, and exploration. The market, usually bustling with business, will instead be filled with engaging literacy activities, hands-on workshops, and valuable resources to support family engagement in reading.
With more than 500 community members—adults and children—attending each of the past two years, this year’s event is expected to exceed previous attendance records, bringing even more families together to celebrate literacy and learning. Attendees will receive enough books to start a small home library, take home additional literacy resources, and enjoy incentives, prizes, and raffles.
"We believe that literacy is the foundation of lifelong success, and empowering families to support their children's reading journey is a key priority," said Kevelin Jones, Superintendent of Flint Community Schools. "'A Taste of Literacy' is more than just an event—a celebration of learning, a space where families can engage in meaningful literacy activities and feel valued as educational partners."
This event allows parents, caregivers, and students to explore effective reading strategies, interactive storytelling, hands-on literacy games, and take-home materials to enhance learning at home. The first 500 attendees will receive complimentary Market Bucks, and families can win raffles and free books throughout the evening.
"We want families to leave this event feeling equipped, confident, and excited about incorporating literacy into their daily lives," said DeLynn Smith, Curriculum Development Specialist (Humanities). "Through storytelling, games, and activities, we aim to make literacy an engaging and accessible experience for all."
Attendees can look forward to a night of free, family-friendly activities designed for all generations, led by Flint Community Schools staff, families, and valued community partners. From immersive read-aloud sessions to literacy-building games and hands-on activities, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
Flint Community Schools extends its appreciation to our key partners, including Crim Fitness Foundation, Snap-ED Michigan Fitness Foundation, Flint Public Library, and the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network, for their continued support in making this event a success.
